Mikhail Aleksevich Makarov

Mikhail Aleksevich Makarov was born in 1827 in Kiev. He was taken in by a tradesman named Makarov when he was a young boy after he lost both of his parents. He began his artistic studies in Kiev under the guidance of architect V. I. Beretti. In 1851, he moved to St. Petersburg to enter the Academy of Arts. He won several medals in the Academy and graduated with the title of Class Artist for his Catholic Cathedral project. For the same project, he received the title of Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1859. Makarov became well known among Russian architects for his ability to design practical elements of buildings that still contribute to a beautiful facade. In addition to many residential buildings around St. Petersburg, from 1865-1867, he built eight dachas on the estate of Princess Kusheleva Ligovo and a chapel for Princess T. D. Stroganova. Makarov died in a house fire in 1873 in St. Petersburg.
