Boris Ionovich Girshovich

Boris Ionivich Girshovich was born in 1858 in Korelichi. He studied at the Vilna Drawing School and at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the sculpture and architecture departments. In 1886, he received two silver medals and received the title of “Klassniy Khudozhnik”, or “Class Artist”, of the third degree for his projects. Along with the architect A. V. Malov, Girshovich supervised the construction of the Great Choral Synagogue in St. Petersburg from 1891 to 1893. In 1892, Girshovich became a full member of the St. Petersburg Society of Architects. Girshovich also worked to improve the Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery. In 1897, he designed and oversaw the construction of the Jewish Community House. He built several houses for famous Jewish figures and two banks on Nevsky Prospekt. He was awarded a silver medal in 1907 at the competition for best facades for his work on the printing house of P.V. Berezin on Ivanovskaya Street in St. Petersburg. Girshovich died in Pavlovsk in 1911 and is buried at the Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery.
