Lev Isaakovich Bakhman

Lev Isaakovich Bakhman was born in 1830 in Chisinau. He was the first Jewish person to graduate from the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied from 1852 to 1861. In addition to the Great Choral Synagogue in St. Petersburg, his primary works include a monument to Pushkin for Moscow (1860) and residential buildings around St. Petersburg. Bakhman lived most of his life in the suburbs of St. Petersburg because he never received the right of residence in the city. He died in Peterhof in 1896.
