Julian Borisovich Bak
Julian Borisovich Bak was born in 1860 in Sventsyany. He attended the Institute of Railway Engineers and worked on the Trans-Caspian Railway. Bak was elected to be a member of the board of the Jewish community of St. Petersburg and the Choral Synagogue. He also played a role in the planning of a complex of buildings in the Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery. Bak valued political freedom and promoting the interests of the Jewish population in Russia. He financially supported two newspapers, Novosti, which promoted Jewish rights, and Rech, a political newspaper. He died in 1908 in St. Petersburg. He is buried in the Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery.
